The literary life of EDWARD JAMES, author, reviewer, occasional poet and former pension adviser to the government of Kyrgyzstan
Yesterday was World Book Night – the night that hundreds of ‘givers’ throughout the UK give away free books. I have been a giver since the scheme was launched 3 years ago and this year I chose ‘The Girl with the Pearl Ear-ring’ to give away. It’s by Tracy Chevalier, inspired by the painting byVermeer.
I put 10 books on offer at a meeting of Charlton Kings Local History Society and they went instantly, along with 10 copies (at £3.99) of Hillside Voices. The remainder I’ll take to Cheltenham General Hospital for the book trolley.
