The literary life of EDWARD JAMES, author, reviewer, occasional poet and former pension adviser to the government of Kyrgyzstan
Wandering airliners are in the news, so I decided to post a brief memoir of my first venture into long-haul flight in 1970 (I went to America and back in the sixties by sea, returning on the last voyage of the Empress of England). It was my swansong as an academic, to realise my ambition to attend an international conference. I call the post The Flying Norseman because I flew on a Norwegian airliner which found it difficult to find an airport that would permit it land. We eventually found our way to Kuala Lumpur.
I will follow this with a brief account of the return flight, which was no less unorthodox.
