The literary life of EDWARD JAMES, author, reviewer, occasional poet and former pension adviser to the government of Kyrgyzstan
This is the theme for the Open Short Story Competition to be launched by Cheltenham Writers’ Circle in the New Year. We are timing it to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, the last great sea battle in which rival fleets hammered it out with heavy guns. Not that entries will be confined to stories about Jutland or any other battle or need even be set ‘afloat’, so long as there is a whiff of salt water. Cheltenham Arts Council has awarded the Circle £200 to help with publicity and administration. We have yet to set the value of the prize or the entry fee but we have got a judge, Helen Hollick of Sea Witch fame. The picture shows me presenting the cheque to the Circle’s Treasurer. Geoff Parker.
