Disputed Paradise

Istria, at the ‘top end’ of the Adriatic is a beautiful country which has changed hands five times in the last one hundred years (Austria, Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia and Croatia) with a short Anglo-American occupation thrown in (1945-7).  We stayed at Opatija, a smart resort built to cater for the Hapsburg aristocracy.  The  big attraction of the area is the huge Roman amphitheatre at Pula.  The main literary interest is that James Joyce lived at Pula.
